Diet or exercise?

If you\’re going to try to follow a diet, you have to think about doing some type of exercise as well so that you will be successful.

Why do diet and exercise go together?

¿Dieta o ejercicio?

1 – While a diet or regimen causes you to lose body fat and muscle mass, exercise helps you conserve or even gain muscle.

2 – While low-calorie diets reduce your body\’s ability to burn energy at rest (metabolism), exercising will increase it.

3 – Not only do you burn calories when you exercise, but you are also preparing your body to keep burning calories for a few hours after exercise. The longer and more intensely you exercise, the more persistent the effect: your body will burn more calories when you are resting, and even when you are asleep!

4 – You\’ll lose more fat and lose it more quickly when you add physical exercise to your diet program.

Weight Loss / management would be great if it was as simple as calories in versus calories out, but unfortunately it isn’t that simple. Calories certainly play a large part in weight management but are certainly not the be all and end all of losing weight. I certainly encourage people in the process of losing weight to understand calories and what they represent in relation to their basal metabolic rate so that they can make a comparison between the two and identify if they are on the right path to weight loss. You can still gain weight if your caloric input is the same as the output if you choose a lot of nutrient depleted food (or as some describe it as dead foods). The body switches to fat conservation or starvation mode and will continue to crave food until the nutrition and vitamin requirements of daily living have been fulfilled (in essence the body will slow down it’s metabolism in starvation mode). The relationship that people have with food goes a long way in determining their overall health. Identifying the triggers that cause people to eat excess amounts of dead food and replacing these behaviours with a sustainable alternate healthy option I believe is the first step to long term weight management.

Calories have to play a major part of any weight loss program and closely folowed by exercise as they both compliment one another. Calorie counting plus exrecising to speed the process up is only one of the benifits and can only lead to a healthy lifestyle.

Exercise i would prefer especially a 45 mins walk in morning. Dieting as per my understanding will make body consider that you are in starvation, so instead of releasing fat, it will preserve it. http://tinyurl.com/6akkves

As inventor of the first portion control plate aptly named “The Diet Plate” (Diet and in what we eat and diet as lose weight)!
I can assure many, that getting the balance of nutrition right, and the quantity of food we consume under control, results in a slow weight loss which is easily maintained.
TDP is clinically trialled for the control of Type 2 Diabetes, if you would like a copy of the study please email.
BMR is an important factor in getting the calorie balance right, because as mentioned eating too few calories can effectively slow the metbolism down and upset the bodies natural ability to regulate it. Weight needs to come off slowly 1-2lbs a week, forget the quick fixes and faddy diets.
Exercise is key to maintaining a healthy metabolism and everybodies metabolism can be different anyway and gene related.
However if you are getting ladies to the gym who carry excess weight, exericse alone will not be enough, they do need to check what they are eating and get the portions under control and make sure that the nutrition on their plate is balanced correctly.
The Diet Plate allows between 1200 – 1550 calories a day for a female and 1500 – 1900 for a male, it automatically by design, adjusts the nutritional values of foods to follow the human bodies balance of good health.
It offers a lifestyle approach, empowers the person using it to take control while not dictating what foods theyshould eat.
We only offer advice on healthy eating, if a person is going to eat junk, they are going to eat junk and nothing any health professional can say will stop them.
Instead, we allow them their junk – but ask them to remain inside the lines on the plate.
Our testimonials are incredible, just check us out at http://www.thedietplate.com their are plenty of business opportunities for resellers.
Many health clubs are seeing a great deal of demand and interest and we only just started selling the to UK clubs recently.

Hi Sportize.me. certainly agree with the content in your blog. Were you trying to delineate between diet and exercise for weight loss (I didn’t quite get the message)? I think I might interpret the word diet differently to you. My interpretation of the word diet is what we eat. Everybody’s diet consists of certain foods that they choose to eat, therefore everybody has a diet. Different diets will achieve different results i.e. weight loss diets for weight loss, detoxification diets to cleanse the system etc etc. So your point about being on a diet will lose muscle mass I would certainly have to question because you are still able to lose fat whilst gaining muscle (bodybuilders do it all the time). If your blog is related to weight loss which I’m assuming it is, perhaps you could add some information on what assists weight loss most effectively, diet or exercise? Great information to get people to read further blogs. I’ve written a blog recently on a similar topic feel free to have a look. http://weighttolife.wordpress.com/2011/04/07/diet-or-exercise-%E2%80%93-which-one-will-lose-weight-fastest-and-keep-it-off/

I definitely agree, and as a Beachbody coach sometimes I have a hard time getting people to understand that they go hand in hand. Some think they can workout and eat whatever they want (I was guilty at one time! ;) Others think they can diet and don’t have to exercise. And I won’t even get into the pills and injections people are doing. All that to say, definitely agree.

Hi to all! First of all, congratulations to the team for the great work developed with Sportize.me.

Nowadays, there are so many miracle diets than promise you to loose a lot of kilos in few days. The best way to loose weight is combine diet and exercise. What we call diet? The correct distribution of nutrients of EACH person.

Diets doesn´t work the same way in two different people. The first thing we must do it is going to a doctor to analize our nutrient levels in our body and after we go to our dietitian who will create the best diet for us. After this step, we go to our personal trainer and we discuss wich plan will have more succes.

There must be a constant communication between doctor-dietitian personal trainer for make the best plan to loose weight.

Thanks to Antonio for let me work in this awesome platform, it will be very useful to everybody.

Diet and exercise go hand in hand. BUT…did you know that for either weight gain or loss the ratio is 70% Nutrition and 30% exercise? Yep….if you don’t put the right fuel into your body, then you won’t get the most out of your workout.
If you are looking for the best fuel go to http://www.jds.myvi.net & get started!

  • Alejandro Hernández Monsalve

Of course that diet is a part important in the process, BUT.. (jejeje with no bad attitude) you can have the correct fuel but if you dont have the correct plan of exercise, diet can carry health problems, you can not do a plan of extensive and intense exercise if you dont have the necessary calories for hold on the exercise.

I mean, in the planning are 50%, but in the process there will be times that these percentages vary.

Diet, aerobic exercising, balancing and fine tuning hormones and neurotransmitters, our sweet tooth, junk foods, and on and on. There are so many balls to juggle, how can anyone make sense out of all of this?

As retired physician and professor of human anatomy and physiology, I took the complex and confusing and made it all fit together so that a high school student can read and understand it but also and a Ph.D. can also appreciate it.

When the publisher suggested a price to charge for the Kindle and Nook version of my book, we said, cut that in half. We want people to have easy access to the information–it is that important. So it is just $4.95 in ebook forms. We did the same for the printed version, – $14.95 but Barnes and Noble on line and Amazon even discount it from that price!

I am such a believer of calories in calories out! Every individual is different and what works for one may not work for another…find that balance of healthy foods and you have to get off the couch and away from the computer and get moving. Even if it is just walking to start…get a pedometer to help keep track of your movement…you may be a snail to start…but what a great motivator to set some goals and keep walking. As a Beachbody Coach we have so many amazing tools to help people get started at any level…from food choices to exercise and sooo much more information. The best part, people can do it at their own pace…or join a group…so much online support to help reach your goals. I would just say that there are sooo many choices and programs out today for people to choose from…they just need to do their own research and see what best fits their own needs and lifestyle. Here is just one choice to consider & read the research and facts behind it…would love your input. http://www.Shakeology.com/MargaritaCoach

Mathew I agree with you entirely. It isn’t just about the amount of calories we take in, it’s about the quality of these calories! This is the reason that traditional calorie controlled diets do not work long term! In fact a lot of traditional diet methods lead to further weight gain down the line!
Thankfully much research is being carried out regarding the effects of certain foods in relationship to our metabolisms, so lets hope this will lead to a reduction in folks feeling deprived, hungry, and lacking in energy for the duration of a ‘Diet’ that sadly rewards them all too often with not only regaining their weight, but due to a decreased metabolic rate, putting on even more-so disheartening!

The Main problem is the fact we focus on “Dieting” The very word conjures up bad feelings immediately. Unfortunately we are all used to the word “Diets” or “Dieting” so that is how we discuss losing weight in our world.
95% of all folks trying to “Diet” are destined to fail.

Why is that? Well do you go into the “Dieting” process all excited and thrilled?
Do you know exactly what you need to do to lose weight? If you did you would need to spend some serious time learning about how the body functions and what the body needs to be at it’s pique performance.

So, we listen to our neighbor who is 20Lbs overweight about their weight loss program or we listen to aunt mary about what she does and my best friends girlfriend can probably tell me what to do.

Folks, getting into shape by eating the proper foods, etc… is not hard. In fact it can be very easy to do.
Start thinking about healthy choices about the food and drink you put into your body
Period. Don’t complicate things, there are so many foods you can prepare or eat raw that are absolutley delicious and that will add vitality to your body.

Don’t become dependent on foods delivered to your door, it’s expensive and you will eventually quit.
You need to understand that this is easy, fun and will sustain you your entire life.
