What do you know about L-Glutamine supplements?

Glutamine is a relatively unknown sports supplement. In this article, we’ll explain to you what glutamine is and the effects it can produce.

Glutamine is a non-essential amino acid, meaning your body can produce it with the nutrition you provide it. Even so, extra consumption of it will benefit you if you work out.

¿Qué sabes de la suplementación con L-Glutamina?

But what does glutamine do?

1- Glutamine is considered a protector of muscle mass during your workouts, given that it acts to repair your body when you undergo intense workouts

2- The dose of glutamine you should take varies between 5 and 10 grams before your workouts

3- It prevents muscle injury

4- It gives you extra strength to lift more repetitions

5- It reduces your fatigue between sets

6- It protects your abdominal walls

As you see, glutamine is a key nutrient for good health and muscle performance.

    Hi Fran,

    Dave here.

First, I would like to say that I appreciate your creation of very thought-provoking discussions, such as the WEIGHT-LOSS one!!! As a person trained at the Yale School of Public Health, I can appreciate the importance of weight management as part of an overall strategy in dealing with the much broader issue of the METABOLIC SYNDROME (aka SYNDROME X).

Second, the L-Glutamine discussion raises a broader issue of CONDITIONALLY Essential Nutrients. An essential nutrient is a nutrient required for normal body functioning that can not be synthesized by the body. However, I believe (and only a belief) that current day demands on the human being require a re-thinking of what is ESSENTIAL.

    I look forward to discussion.

Yes Fran does know what he talks about! I would also add that like glucose, glutamine ALSO serves as a fuel for the brain and increases focus and attentiveness.

i am a 100/200mtr. track and field athlete, can i use this by hard running training schedules.

The research supporting its use is mostly on people with cancer etc. as well as maybe highly conditioned aerobic athletes. as for the other 99% of us,…

don’t know about unknown, but bodybuilders and a lot of athletes have been using it for years. Muscle growth, repair, protein absorption etc. Does your article highlight the effect on the intestine?
I would always advise supplementing with Glutamine and creatine for power, size and strength.

    Hey Fran,

Nice summary. Still I think the first sentence is misleading. Go into any gym in the US and asked anyone, who looks like they workout there, and they’ll know Glutamine. Its a great supplement that anyone on a serious training regiment should be taking.

It is one most of the most essential sport supplement taken at the body building. It is generally advised to take post workout because of its ‘Anti- catabolic effect’ on the muscle, thus promoting muscle recovery.

Supplementing with an isolated amino acid is a questionable practice. Outside of an amino acid complex from a whole protein source, isolates create imbalances. Shortsightedness on this issue can get one into unnecessary trouble.

I know a great product with L – Glutamine, just got on the market by Herbalife. L-Glutamine supports muscle growth and immune function. Runners, triathletes use it, no muscle cramping while training. Helps to eliminate pain in knees and hamstrings. Amy a friend of mine lost 5 lbs in 5 days using Herbalife 24 while training!
