Saunas: do they help you lose weight?

Many are the questions and concerns people have concerning saunas.

There is an erroneous tendency to think that when you go in a sauna, you’ll lose weight just by sweating.

Sauna: ¿adelgaza?

Well, of course you sweat when you’re in a high temperature environment, but you’ll never, ever burn calories … much less fat!

If you weigh yourself before and after going into a sauna, you’ll probably weigh less afterward. This is due to water loss through sweating. You’ll gain this lost weight back when you drink some water.

The benefits of saunas and steam baths have nothing to do with weight loss. Here they are:

1- It helps your body eliminate toxins and impurities through the skin.

2- It opens your pores.

3- It loosens up your muscles.

4- It relaxes you.

Remember not to spend too much time in the sauna unless you’re used to it, because it can cause your blood pressure to drop and make you dizzy or faint.

We recommend that you shower with lukewarm or cold water before going in the sauna, and stay in for only 10 minutes at a time with showers in between. Your body will thank you.

It’s good to go in the sauna after a workout session – it will help your body feel the benefits of your workout even more.

Having Thyroid disease, saunas are not my friend. I do not feel very good afterwards……

Saunas are not meant for weight loss. They are not for everyone. Saunas are for detoxing with supervision.

Short fifteen minute saunas after exercise can aid with weight loss as it increases the heart rate to cope with the bodies cooling system. It has also been proven to speed up metabolism, however, any thing over 15 min is only going to rid yourself of bodily fluids which you are only going to replace when you rehydrate. So my answer…They can have a minimalistic influence, but should not be abused as a solution to weight loss! http://www.livethislife.com.au

I work at Great Lakes Naval Base in the Fitness Center. I see people regularly sitting in the Sauna thinking that if they wear sweats and sweat that they will lose weight. Yes, it is possible, mostly due to the fact that WATER does in fact have weight to it! I also figure the warmer you are, the more inclined you are to urinate and deficate. Alas, more weight comes off because urine “weighs” and so does “feces”. Now with that being said, seriously, use your head. “FAT” loss comes from a reduction in insulin production and increase insulin sensitivity. No amount of sauna can change that.

Nothing personal. Just more of a slight rant.

Thank you for that information Mark. I knew people used steam rooms aiming for weight loss, but I didn’t know saunas could help with that as well.
