5 benefits of sports for children

Exercising or practicing some type of sport is crucial for your physical and mental health.

The benefits of exercise are even more important when you are a child or adolescent, because the benefits you gain from fitness will stay with you the rest of your life.

Some studies show that the sport you practice as a child has a direct influence on your adult life, in regard to space-time perception, motor coordination and even body composition.

Here are 5 benefits of sports for children:

1- Practicing a sport encourages children’s physical, psychological and social development because it gets them moving and interacting with their peers.

2- It increases their decision-making capacity because in many games and sports, children have to take on leadership roles.

3- It fosters self-esteem. When they are at play, children have fun and this encourages a sense of well-being.

4- They’ll acquire skills that will help them in certain things – for example, precision games where fine motor skills are important.

5- They encourage correct bone formation. Bones in the growing stage are benefited by playing sports.

With all these benefits, who wouldn’t want to take part in sports? You may not be a kid any more, but sports for adults provide some amazing benefits too. What are you waiting for? Take part in sports … and enjoy!

Great article Carlos. Unfortunately, In North America at least, we are not fostering a culture where physical activity is expected or praised. It wasn’t that long ago here in Toronto, a school banned ball play during recess for fear of accidents and injuries, how absurd!

We need parents to get engaged, stop wasting countless hours watching the newest reality shows and start making healthy meals for children, encourage them to get out doors, and get outdoors with them. There’s no excuses, almost everyone has time!

It starts at home. We also need parents to pressure governments to bring back old programs and create new programs that get kids active and away from television, potato chips and incorporates more physical education in school. It’s a shame that most Phys-Ed teachers are looked down upon in schools when they are such a vital part of the whole education program.

Yes, I agree that there are great lifelong benefits for children and adults. What you offer is great, especially since budget cuts in schools are making some children/parents pay to play some sports. Until recently, the President fitness program in schools seem to have disappeared.

Thank you for posting Carlos. The benefits are immeasurable and most often last for life for children as they grow into adult-hood. As a ski coach on the weekends, I’ve found that focusing less on the competition but more on the play and skill development allows kids to develop their abilities and have fun while learning. Again, thanks for sharing.
