6 benefits of compression socks for athletes

Years ago, compression socks were only used by those who had circulation problems. These days, they are used by scores of long-distance runners and athletes in a multitude of other disciplines.

Compression socks compress the leg area, improving circulation back to the heart, providing the muscles with more oxygen and accelerating the removal of lactic acid, which reduces muscle pain and cramps.

Here are some other benefits of compression socks:

1- In compressing your calves, they improve circulation of blood from your legs back to your heart.

2- Because they decrease the duration and severity of muscle soreness and cramps, they can also help improve performance.

3- Compression socks trap warmth in the areas they cover. This is handy in the wintertime because it is more difficult to warm up the muscles in cold weather.

4- They prevent excessive movements of the calf when you are at a full run, reducing the risk of injury.

5- If you have a muscle tear, they provide extra warmth and support, speeding the healing process.

6- They also prevent blisters on ankles and feet because the weave is reinforced in specific areas.

While compression socks are NOT a “must have” item, they do assist with faster recovery because they mainly act on the cardiovascular system.

Remember that exercising is extremely beneficial to the circulatory system, keeping it fit and preventing pathologies like clotting, varicose veins, strokes, and heart attacks.

Gracias a las medias de compresión he podido seguir entrenando, a ritmo suave, con periostitis evitando una mayor inflamación.

I only use mine after a long run, about 14 miles. I do my workouts with as little artificial support as possible because I want my body to adapt to everyday conditions. Compression socks do enhance post long run recovery, however, and I love mine.
