Stand on floor and hold a medicinal ball with both hands. Stretch arms to a vertical position with the ball over your head. This is the starting position. Start movement by making a clockwise circle as wide as you can and return to starting position. Then repeat movement, but do the circles in a counterclockwise direction.
Basic Muscles Explanation
The anterior and medial deltoids cover the frontal and middle part of the shoulder and are the main muscles involved in the circle movementos of the arm. This exercise receives the help from the trapezius as a stabilizer of the shoulder articulation during the twists.
Muscles & Joint Actions
In the arm circles, extended arms move forward making wide circles. The deltoids move the scapula to the front and upwards. As the weight gets near the shoulder line, the anterior deltoid is fully activated
Sport Uses
This exercise is important for athletes as it developes the frontal and middle part of the shoulder. The twisting mobility of the shoulder articulation is crucial in sports where arms move forward and up, like gymnastic sports, baseball, basketball, volleybal and raquet sports. These movements normally are executed with a complete range of mobility and against a resistance like a ball or similar.
